Although not a five star recruit, Alex O'Connell was the first recruit from the class of 2017 to sign with Duke back in the summer of 2016. A first look of O'Connell gives one the impression that he is some skinny, lanky guy; however, as he has shown in the first few games of this season, these claims are anything but true. Even though he is only 171 pounds at 6'6", O'Connell has proven that he can be a viable bench player to come in for either Grayson Allen or Gary Trent, Jr.
O'Connell will be an important part for the second unit when he comes in. His best strength as a player is by far his shooting ability as he is currently shooting 60%+ from the field and 50%+ from the three point line (*as of Dec. 5). Although he is shooting way above average, he isn't shooting at a high volume. Nevertheless, O'Connell's high shooting off the bench sparks the the second unit.
Take a look into getting to know a little bit more about Alex O'Connell and his time when he first transitioned from high school to Duke.
